Atleast in South India, one of the only ways to pray Lord Ganesha is by putting thoppukaranam...also it is one of the punishing methods used in schools, which i never got anytime ;) Now, that has been researched at length and given a new avatar in the name, Superbrain Yoga.
And they even have a dedicated website for this! It is funny to read the step by step procedure for something which is performed so commonly here without any huge process guidelines...
Maybe, these guys should come to India and try to analyze the worshipping ways for the various gods!
I truly hope they haven't patented this, while the Indian Government is snoring away to glory!!

As we all know that most of the superstitious rituals found actually have some scientific explanations behind them, may be our ancient 'Guru's or 'Teachers' knew about the benefits of this exercise so they asked the dull or naughty students to go thru this. And hence the carry over..
