Charm!

Nowadays, many of my posts are kind of selfish in nature :) ie, many are related to the analysis of me and the personality.
hope this stops pretty soon :)

There is always one nagging/surprising point about few charming individuals whom i have met. For instance, they know when to add a wit to the conversation which in turn will either lighten the moment or add a personal touch leading to appreciative, happy to be thoughts about this person among others. And the thing is, these individuals would never have contributed any grey cell matters to the conversation. All they would've done is to make sure their presence is felt at the right moment and in a truly positive, comforting manner. This inturn makes others feel comfortable with this individual, maybe because one doesn't feel threatened/ dominated.

As a person in the tech field, although i am definitely sure that nowadays my wit levels in a normal mood is surely on the rise, i am yet to master this true skill of charm.

And it was amazing to read an article in FT titled, "Leaders who use charm to reach the top"

Eventhough, as a techie, one might be tempted to reply that grey cells matter more, it is this skill which is needed the most than many of the extrovert characteristics to leave a lasting impression.

Microsoft Courier

Even i was wondering how Microsoft could come up with a code name,"Courier", which seems to have no correlation with the device. But looking at many other crazy code names, this sounds ok. :)

Thanks to AM, saw this link about Courier.

If at all, this is true and if this device comes out in the market with the same functionality as mentioned here, then i would really love to own one.

Because, it's truly amazing. One can carry it anywhere from meetings to grocery shops.

After the first generation IPod Shuffle, Courier is the next device which made me say, "wow. it'll be great to own one".

A year of change!

I think nowadays, i seem to think of blogger only where there are some points to be pondered over or something sad to be written about :)
Actually, it's not sad really but the reality. The reality is sad and not many people prefer to hear it again as they are aware of it and trying to ignore it.

Anyways, today is one of those special days which deserve to be remembered for its past a year ago.
Sep 15th, the day Lehman Brothers was allowed to collapse by US Fed last year...thus tumbling the world economies and many lives.

I still wonder how an 150 year old bank after surviving 2 world wars and a great depression collapsed. Wonder whether it was a plot by Goldman not to have competition or it was an ego war between two people...This article seems to give Henry Paulson's view.

Here is a BBC Audioshow about Lehman.

And this is an interesting Reuters timeline of the last year crisis.

I did spend time to read the replies for Reuters question.

While majority of the population seems to have been fooled, there are a few smart people who invested in Gold at $340 which is now around $950 or who moved his investments from equities to government bonds in sep-2008,moved it back to equities this year beginning and thus made $200K profits!

These comments made me wonder as how i was affected.

I think i have become more doubtful and less secure. The stress levels have increased a bit.

That too after witnessing a first pink slip day, there is always a fear in mind. Eventhough, i am no longer with that old company, i am still a bit fearful when i take more than a couple of days off even in this new company.
Infact on that pink slip day morning, i was late to office because i was attending a job interview. Yes, i had started my job search in October that year. So when the layoff happened, i was a bit early in the job market. This helped in getting a job inspite of the tightening job market, but monetarily there was a hit.

Interestingly, later i came to know of one truth. My name was on that layoff list on that day. My team member who was laid off mentioned it to me few weeks later. I never understood why i was retained. I was later informed that the person who was handing over the pinkslips felt that my name was a mistake and deferred from calling me.
Still the thought that i was on the list is an uncomfortable truth.

Nowdays, often i kind of relate my career shift to an illtimed pitstop in a F1 race.

It's like a race when the race leader comes in for a pit stop after totally exhausting his fuel, changes to medium tyres and ends up facing rain while rejoining the race. He is then forced to drive slowly for the whole lap, come back again and change to wet weather tyres. When he rejoins now, he is at 18th place in the race. Eventually, he might climb back to 10th, but still no points.

Although the skeptic in me might try to find out reasons as what could've been done better, the truth is there is always a factor called luck which cannot be factored out.

The thing about races is, losing points in one race often doesn't make a huge difference for a proven team.
But for individuals, this one screw up in career might cost a bit more.

And this is exactly what economists seem to have found out.

I particularly like the conclusion of the article : "The inspirational message from this research: if you are forced to accept a less attractive job because of temporary hard times, actively look to get back on your dream career path as soon as you can. The less inspirational message: luck matters, and bad luck lasts. "

Anyways, as this article says,Get it Right today, Be Glad tomorrow, one should be happy to learn that the lesson is learnt at an early stage... that too as an Indian who will not have any social security or any protection from government inspite of paying taxes for a life time :)

What's your type?

It was during some personality development training which i attended in 10th standard, i took the pyschometric test for the first time.
The instructors gave the results and advised me that i should pursue a career as lawyer. He mentioned that as per the test it would be a perfect career for me.

I was very skeptical as how one can analyze and suggest my future based on 50 Q&A. What if i wasn't diligent in answering those? Still I was surprised about the result and wondered how one would earn money as a lawyer. Although recently, when i went for the trip, i met a law student who said that he wants to be a lawyer as that is the only profession where one can use one's brain to the fullest and earn a lot of money. And i totally agree :)

Anyways, often nowadays, i do ponder over as whether i am in the right profession.
Although i will defer to blog the answer for now, it led me to take some similar psychometric test some 5-6 months ago.

And today, i happened to hit upon the same site again through some browsing and decided to retake the test to check whether the result is the same as i had forgotten all the questions.

To my utter surprise, the type was the same. I don't remember the percentages to compare with the new one.
Still, it's interesting to see that the type is the same. And this mainly seems to prove that one had been genuine and consistent in one's answers.

Your Type is
INTJ
IntrovertedIntuitiveThinkingJudging
Strength of the preferences %
22562533

You are:
  • slightly expressed introvert
  • moderately expressed intuitive personality
  • moderately expressed thinking personality
  • moderately expressed judging personality

What is more surprising is the fact that one of the professions suggested for this type is lawyer.
Wonder whether that instructor was right when he suggested this in my 10th std.

Anyways, one is quite upset that one isn't Extrovert. Can't change now or maybe it would be too difficult :)
But interesting to read about INTJ and i seem to nod in agreement over a large part of the analysis. Also good to see that there are quite a few smart fellows out there. ;) What better way to improve one's morale than through self appreciation? ;) :)

So, is any one else an INTJ out there?
